Mr
Stephen, on his EA DVD655 full mod after a initial clock installation
only.
"By the way, I've been
doing more listening/burn in to the Pioneer for the last few days. As
expected, the player is gradually improving. I am very pleased with what
has been done so far. I hear vast improvements in terms of clarity,
musicality, precision, depth and micro-dynamics. The top end smoothness is
also beginning to appear, as you promised. I think bass control has also
improved, since formerly the Pioneer tended to have a rather boomy,
undefined bass. Overall, the Pioneer is already sounding like a much more
expensive CD player than before, smooth, controlled, assured, and very
musical. Well done, James! You're amazing!"
Comments after sending his Pioneer 665 for a second
mod (General mod + linear power supply installation package) a few days
after his EAM clock installation.
"Initial impression after having it back:
-
(a) The bass had
been cleaned up considerably. Previously, the bass management of this
player was quite poor. I thought it was the fault of my speakers, but
now i know that the electronics were deficient. The bass is now much
tighter and more focused. There are still CDs which sound flabby but
the overall improvement has been very great.
The top end has
also benefitted in the sense that it now sounds much more neutral and
smooth. There is no longer that very forward, glaring upper mid-range
which really interfered with some of the music I listened to. If I could
plot the response curve of the player, I'll bet that it is a lot flatter
now. And that has contributed to a much more enjoyable listening
experience.

There is a great
improvement in detail and naturalness. Before the mod, there was a
tendency for the player to sound "digital". Now, there is no
sense that one is listening to a CD or SACD. The sound is clean,
detailed and very musical. The first listen gave me goosebumps. Then I
ran in the player for another 24 hours, and it didn't sound so good. I
didn't let that discourage me because I know the BGs can sometimes
play this trick on you.
I ran it in
further, and yesterday had a chance to watch a DVD,
"Underground". It was really good, the picture quality was
clean and the colours were vivid. Then just before I slept, I put on a
CD of a piano trio, and although the CD wasn't some audiophile quality
stuff, the piano was extended, clean and articulate. I wasn't sitting in
the sweet spot so I have no idea of verifying this, but from my
lying/reading position on bed, the player was again starting to sound
really excellent, as expected.
Today it is still running in, and I expect to be able to do some serious
listening perhaps later tonight. I will post more thoughts once I've had a
chance to familiarize myself with the mods. But so far, I am a very happy
customer."
